As many of you are aware, our studio faced a devastating fire at our location on Wednesday, July 15th. While the damage to the space is extensive, the most important news is that thankfully everyone is safe.
The fire occurred in the early morning starting in Room 2. We have been told that it appears to have been electrical in nature, but we do not yet have confirmation on the official report.
What’s Happening Now
We currently have a company on-site filtering the air and stabilizing the space to prevent mold and further damage. This week, we are meeting with insurance adjusters, investigators, and contractors to begin the long process of rebuilding.
The Search for a Temporary Home
We aren’t letting this stop our training for long. While Kaci has been managing the insurance and restoration side, Jeff has been busy scouting temporary locations across the city. He is currently narrowing down the best options so we can get back on the mats together as quickly as possible. We’re hoping to make a decision in the next few days and see y’all on the mats hopefully by this weekend. (But don’t hold me to this.)
Memberships
We want to give our members clear choices regarding your membership during this transition.
These options are no different than our standard policies:
- put your account on hold,
- cancel your membership, or
- keep it as it is.
We’ve also heard from some of you that you want to continue to keep your membership active and pay more. If you want to keep your membership as it is, recognizing we anticipate limitations in class times, you don’t have to do anything at all.
If you don’t intend to train and instead would like to make your membership a donation to the studio, we’ll be setting up an option for that too. More on this soon.
How You Can Help
We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of this community.
While it isn’t safe yet to have volunteers help physically in the studio, we will definitely put out a call for your muscle when the time is right! Our mats won’t move themselves and those things are heavy. So prepare yourselves. We will need your help.
Additionally, we will be setting up a fundraising site to help cover the upfront costs that insurance may not immediately meet.
Listen, we hate asking for help. We hate the idea of having folks pay memberships and then asking for more on top of that. As I’m looking through the costs to rebuild, even assuming insurance covers what we anticipate, this will be a burden and a slog. It will be challenging. We’ve had to come to terms with this reality and we’ll be asking for your support. But the resistance in us to set up a GoFundMe is very, very real. So bear with us as we drag our feet on this part.
Stay Informed
We will be posting regular updates to keep you in the loop on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. But I’ll also keep this place updated with the latest and greatest.
As always, feel free to reach out if you have questions. You can reach me at kaci@krav or Jeff at jeff@krav.
